Chelsea Watego takes us through her progression of coming to grips with how to survive and thrive as a colonised Blakfulla in the colony. From early attempts to prove her worth by outcompeting at the colonisers game to the realisation through support of strong black women leaders that black sovereignty is lived through our staunch survival, in the daily battles and the maintenance of deep connections and our Indigenous relational world view.
I cried early on as I identified elements of colonial violence I and my family suffered but had not recognised. I celebrated the blue sky moments, my heart swelled at the stories of Black fatherhood and strength demonstrated by facing the world each day. Finally I felt resolution to stay committed to struggle each day to preserve and build up on the work done by my ancestors to survive in this land and to stand up for our generations yet to come.

A ground-breaking work - and a call to arms - that exposes the ongoing colonial violence experienced by First Nations people.
In this collection of deeply insightful and powerful essays, Chelsea Watego examines the ongoing and daily racism faced by First Nations peoples in so-called Australia. Rather than offer yet another account of 'the Aboriginal problem', she theorises a strategy for living in a society that has only ever imagined Indigenous peoples as destined to die out.
Drawing on her own experiences and observations of the operations of the colony, she exposes the lies that settlers tell about Indigenous people. In refusing such stories, Chelsea narrates her own- fierce, personal, sometimes funny, sometimes anguished. She speaks not of fighting back but of standing her ground against colonialism in academia, in court and in the media. It's a stance that takes its toll on relationships, career prospects and even the body.
Yet when told to have hope, Watego's response rings clear- Fuck hope. Be sovereign.

Excellent book, highly recommended.
A very worthwhile 'must read' for non-Indigenous Australians, residents and all visitors.

This book is all Fire and Soul and Heart. My whole book is underlined with notes around the edges and drawings of love hearts or stars or tears. This book is an unflinching declaration of Sovereignty. It was not written for me as a white person- but I have been moved and transformed by the reading of this. I had the opportunity to be a (mostly observant and silent) member of a Book Club facilitated by @wearethemainstream and facilitated by Indigenous women directly after the book was released. Dr Chelsea Watego even joined us for one of the weeks. The Wisdom and Beauty and Truth in that virtual room was staggering and awe- inspiring. Read this!
